Prince Albert Grand Council – Forestry & Emergency Protective Services provides wildfire training and employment opportunities for the 12 First Nations of Black Lake, Fond du Lac, Hatchet Lake, Lac La Ronge, Montreal Lake, Peter Ballantyne, Wahpeton, Sturgeon Lake, James Smith, Cumberland House, Red Earth and Shoal Lake.
Job Title: ‘Fire Guardian’
We are currently looking for twenty-five (25) Youth (between 18-30) to receive comprehensive wildfire training that would allow them to branch into resource management and/or fire management positions. The intent of this “Fire Guardians Pilot Project” is to train the next generation of wildfire managers and encourage career advancement in this growing industry.
Job Summary:
As a ‘Fire Guardian’ your job is to learn about fire management tools, techniques and strategies to minimize the damage caused by wildfire. Participation in this 18-month pilot project will provide learning opportunities and certification to the next generation of wildland fire managers focusing on wildfire prevention, mitigation, response and recovery. As a ‘Fire Guardian’, you will represent your First Nation while gaining the necessary skills and certifications required to advance your career in fire/resource management.
Scope of Responsibilities:
- Contribute to a large team that travels to remote work projects to safeguard values at risk that are important to First Nations communities.
- Contribute to fuel reduction projects including cutting trees, removing vegetation, and setting up equipment to pump water into burning areas.
- Use firefighting tools such as pumps, hoses, chainsaws and hand tools to control and extinguish fires when on crew deployments.
- Patrol burned areas and extinguish hotspots that could restart fires.
- Plan, direct and execute firefighting strategies including carrying out wildfire risk assessments, planning vegetation management and mitigation projects, and following environmental monitoring protocols, policies and best practices.
Qualifications:
Minium 18 years of age or completed high school. Previous wildfire experience is an asset, but not required for this opportunity. This is a development program and will be focused towards providing the minimum qualifications for professional wildland firefighting and/or resource management technicians. Practical skills in ‘all hazards’ approach to Emergency Management will provide a learning environment best suited for those returning to school in the resource management field (ie, Land Management, Integrated Resource Management, Renewable Resource Management etc.)
