ADDICTIONS COUNSELLOR

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Clinical Supervisor of the YUASNI TIPI FAMILY TREATMENT CENTRE (subject to the Personnel Policies & Procedures of the Prince Albert Grand Council).   The Addictions Counsellor will support and adhere to diverse cultural backgrounds of the families they serve.  In addition, the Addictions Counsellor is a professional counseling position with a significant focus on supporting family wellness, cultural knowledge sharing, and assisting with land-based therapeutic activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Required to work shift work as needed.
  • Provide holistic, culturally appropriate assessment, counselling, and therapeutic approaches for families at Yuasni Tipi Family Treatment Centre. This includes opportunities for culturally based healing practices and teachings.
  • Able to specialize in specific areas of treatment activity, such as current drug trends, as well as intergenerational trauma.
  • Professional expertise in treatment therapy such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Couples Counselling, Motivational Interviewing, Life Skills, etc.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with professional resources, community agencies and other treatment programs to aid in program development.
  • Understanding the development and needs of the youth in the facility.
  • Develop and maintain effective liaison with other treatment programs, legal and health care services, school programs, NNADAP programs, Child and Family service agencies and Ministry of Social Services.
  • Attend community and professional meetings, workshops and conferences related to treatment program activities as necessary.
  • Open to assisting in cultural approaches and land-based therapeutic methods.
  • Willingness to participate in cultural events and activities.
  • Knowledge of First Nations culture, values, language, and spirituality is an asset.
  • Establish and maintain effective community contacts within the Prince Albert Grand Council area, with Elders and cultural people to assist in the development of client counselling services related to First Nations Culture, identity, and spirituality.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum, two (2) years continuous sobriety/abstainer.
  • A diploma in Chemical Dependency or Mental Health & Wellness or other. Minimum two (2) years counselling experience in an alcohol and drug abuse treatment centre.
  • Fluency in the English language is a requirement, fluency in a First Nations language within the Prince Albert Grand Council area is an asset.
  • Certificate in St. John’s First Aid/CPR is a requirement.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge, awareness and understanding of First Nations Culture.
  • Experience in one or more of the following is an asset; land based, First Nations cultural methods, youth or life skills.
